Directly in front of Bir Hakeim metro station is the small and busy square named after the Jewish victims of la Grande Rafle du Vélodrome d'Hiver, the 'great round-up' of 16-17 July 1942 (la Place des Martyrs Juifs du Vélodrome d'Hiver).

The memorial is a few hundred metres away in a small garden between the Seine and the rue Nelaton, the street on which the Vélodrome d'hiver (Winter Cycle Stadium) was originally situated.
